[Memory] Reseating RAM

Possible Problems

  • No video display when system powers on
  • System hangs at BIOS screen
  • System reboots instead of loading the Operating System
  • Intermittent system process hangs

Solution

  • RAM not plugged in properly
  • Separate article if there is a possible defective stick of RAM

Access your motherboard by removing whatever cover or panels needed. Not all barebone/chassis/cases are all the same. The examples shown here may not match your system, but the procedure is similar.

  1. Access your System's Motherboard

  2. Dismount sticks of RAM using the (Hold-down) clips

Some motherboards have 1 or 2 clips for each stick RAM, both examples are shown here.

    Examples:

    Single Clip

    Double Clip

  3. Firmly plug in sticks of RAM until the clips 'click' into place

Should receive 1 click per clip.

  4. Power on your system to see if problem is fixed

If you are able to access your BIOS settings, be sure to check within the BIOS Settings to ensure ALL sticks of RAM are visible.

    Example:

Pressing the 'Del' key will typically allow you to enter the BIOS Settings during System POST. Memory Topology in your BIOS Settings is an option to see what sticks of RAM are properly installed on your motherboard.
