[CPU] Re-seating the CPU

Possible Problems

  • System does not power on
  • No video display when system powers on
  • System hangs at BIOS screen
  • System reboots instead of loading the Operating System

Solution

  • CPU is defective
  • Motherboard CPU socket pins are bent
  • Separate article if defective CPU unit (for multiple CPU systems)

Access your motherboard by removing whatever cover or panels needed. Not all barebone/chassis/cases are all the same. The examples shown here may not match your system, but the procedure is similar.

  1. Access your System's Motherboard

  2. Remove Air Shroud (if system has it installed)
  3. Remove heat sink off the CPU
  4. Dismount CPU hold-down frame
There are two clips that hold down the CPU.

  5. CAREFULLY remove CPU from socket
  6. Inspect Motherboard CPU socket pins
