Onboard/Offboard display notes by Motherboard Make/Supplier
The method in which on/offboard video is set differs by supplier; please see below
--Definitions:
Onboard = The video display port build onto the motherboard. NOT the graphics card. Different results may very depending on the hardware used.
Offboard = The graphics card shown/noted in your system info flier. (General rule of thumb; Video will be output via the lowest populated PCIe slot containing a GPU)
Accessing BIOS:
Regardless of what machine you are using BIOS needs to be accessed. (Press del/F2 during BOOT)
Follow the paths below for each of the specific suppliers.
Supplier | Path | Note(s) |
---|---|---|
ASUS | IntelRCSetup > Miscellaneous Configuration > Active Video | |
Supermicro | PCIe/PCI/PnP > VGA Priority > On/Offboard | |
Tyan | CORRECT = Platform Configuration > Miscellaneous Configuration > Active Video WRONG = Advanced > Onboard Device Configuration > | The WRONG method will disable VGA all together defaulting the system to OFFBOARD; this could result in a CMOS reset should the GPU ever be removed |
Note:
Regarding the general rule of thumb above, this can vary based on hardware and is extremely important to remember if and when additional GPUs are added to a system.
