From fresh Ubuntu 18.04 install. I installed from '18.04.1-live-server-amd64.iso'

Step-by-step guide


  1. apt-get -y update && upgrade && dist-upgrade
  2. apt install make
apt install gcc
  3. bash -c "echo blacklist nouveau > /etc/modprove.d/blacklist-nvidia-nouveau.conf"
  4. bash -c "echo options nouveau modeset=0 >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-nvidia-nouveau.conf"
  5. initramfs -u
## takes 1-2 minute
reboot
  6. init 3
  7. ./NVIDIA*
  8. reboot
