'hiberfil.sys' is a system file dedicated to saving the current state (memory) of the PC when going into Hibernation mode. The file size adapts to how much RAM (memory) your PC contains. 

Step-by-step guide

  1. Run 'CMD' (Command Prompt) as Administrator

    Right click 'Start' button for Windows 8.1/10 for this shortcut

  2. Enter the following command: 'powercfg -h off'

  3. Hibernate option should not appear anymore in Shut down menu, and the system file should not appear anymore in 'Local Disk (C:)'
